The library of the National Academy of Music “Prof. Pancho Vladigerov” has existed since the founding of the Academy in 1921. It is a unique, specialized scientific-methodical unit for music and music-theoretical publications in our country. Its history is connected with the name of Prof. Dr. Stoyan Brashovanov, who headed it from 1925 to 1941. After him, the names of Prof. Asen Karastoyanov, Dr. Vasil Spasov, Nikola Topuzov, Yordanka Eksarova, who contributed for its growth and with an important contribution to its development.
Today, the Library plays an essential role in the preparation and proper running of the educational process at the National Academy of Music. The fund has been opened in numerous departments – in 64 of them the sheet music for instrumental, symphonic, chamber, vocal, vocal-instrumental music, etc. is presented.,15 departments make up the book fund, the most developed of which are – art, music theory, music history (general, Bulgarian, Western European, Russian and personalities). A large part of them are rare, valuable specimens, manuscripts, old editions of high bibliographic value. In addition to the Library, there is also a Sound Library, which collects, processes and stores a musical fund, reflected in sound carriers. Work on processing (overdubbing, restoration), archiving and playback of phonograms is carried out.
Since 1996, the Library has started automated processing of newly received materials. In 2008/09, according to a project financed by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Science, with the help of students from the Academy, a complete retro conversion of the old catalogs was carried out. The automated library information system of the NAM provides for the use of individual passwords for access to the Internet catalog of every teacher, student or employee of the Academy registered in it. The procedure for borrowing materials for home use until the end of the school year (30.06) and only for the day is strictly regulated, with strict observance of the return deadlines. After they expire, the system automatically charges a fine for the unpaid ones.
