Prof. Daniela Dikova, Ph.D.

Head of Department

Instruction in chamber music at the National Academy of Music is focused mainly on the specific problems of ensemble playing and interpretation tasks relating to the style, historic period and aesthetics of the musical piece. The Department strives to train and educate professionals with broad musical culture of ensemble playing and love and enthusiasm for chamber music.

Specialized instruction in chamber music began in 1931. The first professor was the violin player Prof. Arseni Lechev (1902 – 1984), who had studied in Berlin and Paris. In the first years after the Academy was founded, the prominent Bulgarian pianist and composer Dimitar Nenov also taught chamber music.

The musicians who lectured and instructed in chamber music had noticeable, impressive impact on the Bulgarian music scene, in shaping the perception and knowledge of young musicians and composers, and in the development of chamber music in Bulgaria in general.

Accompaniment instruction is also taught at the Department, as the course introduced in 1968 by Prof. Savka Shopova, who had previously worked as an accompanist at the Violin Department. In 1977, Piano Accompaniment was moved into its own department, managed by Prof. Lili Popova. Since 2003, the Piano Accompaniment instructors have been part of the Chamber Music Department, and in recent years other accompanying instruments have also been included, prompting the renaming of the department to Chamber Music and Accompaniment.

Since 2017, the courses in Folk Singing and Folk Ensembles have also been part of the Department.
