Period of study:

– 2 academic years, full time, for holders of a Bachelor’s degree in Music

A total of 60 credits per academic year is required to receive a Master’s degree. They are accumulated from the compulsory (70%), elective (20%) and optional (10%) subjects.

Admission:

1. Holders of a Bachelor’s degree from the Musical pedagogy major in the Theory, Composition and Conducting Faculty of the National Academy of Music are admitted on grounds of their score from the defense of a diploma thesis

2. Holders of a Bachelor’s degree in music from other higher education institutes Students are required to take a written exam on topics from a previously announced questionnaire.

The exam lasts 4 astronomic hours.

Compulsory: Solfeggio; Harmony; History of music; History of Bulgarian music; Ethnomusicology; Piano; Foreign language; Philosophy; Study of musical instruments; Polyphony; Academic major; Symphonic orchestration; Score reading; Introduction to musicology; Musical analysis; Music theoretical systems; Music criticism

Elective: Pedagogy; Conducting a choir from a piano score; Choral workshop; Choral studies; Music psychology; Voice training; Orchestration for wind ensemble; Educational psychology; Basics of multimedia; Musical acoustics; Music management; Church music; Methods of piano teaching; History of jazz; Opera dramaturgy; Choir repertoire and literature; Philosophy of music

Optional: Foreign languages – 1 and 2; Sports; History of art.

 Professional qualifications:

– To do research work in a wide range of contemporary musicology;

– To perform popularizing and educational activities in the sphere of music

– To work in the sphere of music criticism and publicizing;

– To teach musicological studies at secondary and higher institutes of music pedagogy or in the faculties and departments or specialized classes at other secondary and higher education institutes;

– To work as editors and producers in the publication of musicological, popular or educational literature about music, musical periodical issues; as specialists in the production of musical radio- and TV programs, in the movie industry, in the release of CDs and other sound carriers of recorded music, in the organization of music performances.

Career opportunities: in research institutes of musicology, higher and secondary music education institutes, philharmonic societies, musical theatres, etc.; in sound recording, film, radio and TV studios, publishing houses and periodicals related to the art of music.
