Prof. Andrey DIAMANDIEV, Ph.D

Music Theory is a main unit within the structure of the Academy. It is connected to all majors and faculties, bringing together courses in: solfeggio, harmony, polyphony, musical analysis, instrumentology, orchestration, aesthetics, philosophy, pedagogy, and teaching methodology.

Some of the most remarkable Bulgarian composers such as Parashkev Hadzhiev, Vesselin Stoyanov, Marin Goleminov, Assen Karastoyanov, Alexandar Raychev, and Dimitar Sagaev have worked here and contributed to its ongoing development. Foundation work is done providing a basis in Bulgarian music theory, touching on both teaching methodology and specialised research. Fundamentally important are the works of Assoc. Prof. Konstantin Konstantinov, Prof. Ivan Peev, and Prof. Kamen Popdimitrov, who integrated the subject of solfeggio with all other theory-related subjects.

The influx of new forces, and new generations of pedagogues developed the traditions of their predecessors and initiated a new stage in theoretical musicology, playing a crucial role in the growth of the department. This has been a strategic goal and task for the forward-thinking great Bulgarian composers, Parashkev Hadzhiev, Vesselin Stoyanov, Marin Goleminov, Dimitar Sagaev, and Alexandar Raychev. They observed the students majoring in composition, singling out some of the best students as their successors. These chosen students took the subject to a new level, and became the future professors in the Academy – Bentsion Eliezer, Zdravko Manolov, Pencho Stoyanov, Tsvetan Tsvetanov, Dimitar Tapkov, Dimitar Hristov, Bozhidar Abrashev, Evgeni Avramov. They became assistants to the professors and provided continuity and a natural connection between the generations.

It was in this creative spirit that the next group of talented lecturers emerged – professors Alexander Tekeliev, Georgi Kostov and Mihail Pekov, and later  also Prof. Neva Krasteva, Prof. Artin Poturlyan, Prof. Andrey Diamandiev, Prof. Zhorzh Bonev. The combination of composing and teaching of music theory has resulted in great creative achievements in the department. Instrumental in turning the department into a research centre in the Music Academy were the works and research of professors Tomi Karklisiyski, Elena Kuteva, Elena Stoyanova, Zvezda Yonova, Penka Kadieva, and Maria Simeonova.

The range of subjects broadened with the introduction of new courses  –  aesthetics, philosophy, psychology of music and pedagogic psychology, taught by the professors Veska Haralampieva and Ilya Yonchev (since 1989). In 1973 Sound Recording was introduced as a major (at present Sound Recording, Sound and Media Design), the foundations of which were laid by associate professors Mihail Lyutskanov and Slavcho Malyakov and later by Prof. Ivo Keremidchiev.

The department is headed by Prof. Dimitar Sagaev, Prof. Zdravko Manolov, Prof. Alexandar Raychev, Prof. Pencho Stoyanov, Prof. Tsvetan Tsvetanov, Prof. Zvezda Yonova, Prof. Neva Krasteva, Prof. Veska Haralampieva, and Prof. Elena Stoyanova, Prof. Tomi Karklisiyski, Sc.D.
