Library and sound collection

The library of the “Prof. Pantcho Vladigerov” National Academy of Music has existed since the founding of the Academy in 1921 It is a unique, specialized scientific and methodological center for printed music and  music-theoretical publications in Bulgaria. Its history is connected with the name of Prof. Stoyan Brashovanov, PhD, who headed it from 1925 to 1941. His name is followed by those the names of Prof. Asen Karastoyanov, Vasil Spasov, PhD, Nikola Topuzov and Yordanka Eksarova who largely contributed for its expansion and further development. Today the library performs an essential role in the preparation and proper functioning of the teaching process at the Academy. The book-stock is held in separate departments – 64 of them contain printed music for instrumental, symphonic, chamber, vocal, vocal-instrumental performance and more, 15 departments form the book stock, the most developed of them being art, music theory, music history (general, Bulgarian, Western European, Russian and personal biographies). The majority of them are rare, valuable editions, manuscripts and old editions of high bibliographical value. Along with the library there exists a rich sound collection which incorporates and processes invaluable sound carriers. Substantial work is done on the processing (recording, restoration), archiving and reproduction of phonograms. Since 1996 the library began work in automatic handling of newly acquired materials. In the 2008/09 academic year, on a project funded by the Ministry of Education and Science and with the assistance of students from the Academy there was carried out a complete retro-conversion of the old catalogues (both books and printed music). The automated library information system of the National Academy of Music provides the use of individual passwords to access the Internet catalog by every registered in it teacher, student or employee of the Academy.

The procedure for borrowing materials for home use until the end of the academic year (June 30) for the day only is strictly regulated, in strict compliance with deadlines for return. On delay, the system automatically charges a fine to the culprit. Since 2008, the Academy is a member of the International Association of Music Libraries (IAML). The four main projects of the Association aiming not only to provide the fullest possible information services to professionals from all spheres science and art music but also to adequately represent national cultures in the world database: RILM - Repertoire International de Literature Musicale, RISM - Repertoire International des Sourses Musicales, RIPM - Repertoire International de la Presse Musicale, RidiM - Repertoire International d'iconographie Musicale (free access). RILM is available for the Academy’s specialists the ProQuest platform, the national license for which has been paid. On the territory of the Academy via Internet there is access to three international databases provided by Ministry of Education, Youth and Science: “ISI Web of knowledge”, “Science Direct and “Scopus”.
